[x3d-public] What is the metaverse?

What is the metaverse?

So, in the wonderful WWW-based
ExperienceVerse we are describing,
one big question comes up.

How do you know you are using
this Immersive Web?

Or, in fact, how to tell if you,
as the author or user or participant,
are currently Immersed in any
real, virtual, or mixed digital,
and maybe some analog, simulation
generated by humans and their machines?

With consultation from:
https://www.linkedin.com/in/johannes-behr-501ab67
and this Behr-Polys collaboration,
https://metaverse-standards.org/news/blog/building-the-world-wide-webiverse/
it turns out the answer is actually simple.

When you are navigating and interacting
in a 3D environment then you are there.

The legacy web is 2D and the metaverse web is 3D,
even nD+1.

Further we might say the experience is when and where
time and events drive the experience and,
this is important, you have suspended your disbelief
or are otherwise convinced you and your Character/Avatar
can navigate and interact with the given environment.

So, the virtuality may be a special box on a web page
that shows a realistic spinning tennis shoe that
you can examine.
Or, a highfi realtime simulation of a favorite
exploration as interactive as your equipment
and bandwidth can provide.
It only matters if you directly or
through your digital you,
you can feel like you are a part of the show
and share with others.

Oh yes, another very important attribute of
this virtual reality concept is that you
must be able to extract your character and
yourself from the production and return to
your natural self.

Thanks Johannes and All Best,
Joe

Hi John,

I do not want to discuss all those terms (XR, AR, AV, VR), as I have the feeling, they are descriptions of concrete technologies, that tell us, HOW something is implemented.

My concern is about WHAT are we doing with them?

More technological term: what's the use case?

Or generally, what are the effects on society, on the psyche of the people.

More a philosophic point of view, if you like.

All the best
CP/V

I mean, MR does not "extend" reality, it's just a special part of reality, which deals with immersive, interactive, multiuser story telling, command and control

I like "mixed reality = virtual reality + real reality".

I mean, VR does not "extend" reality, it's just a special part of reality, which deals with immersive, interactive story telling, command and control

Perhaps “extended-reality” would be better than “virtual-reality.” Meaning we’ve extended beyond mere VR into other accessible media including the passive and active external environments. This means that real objects with behaviors can be brought into each metaverse, and many metaverses can be viewed in the metaverse, and state can transfer between metaverses via the external environments. This XR idea of our blossoming metaverse to integrate
realtime Spatial anchors and assets of the current reality
with realtime Scene anchors and assets of the current virtuality
means the metaverse definition of our Immersive Web
needs to be extended.

(Current) Definition from Oxford Languages ·

/ˈmedəˌvərs/
noun Computing

"a virtual-reality space in which users can interact with
a computer-generated environment and other users"

New Extended Candidate:
metaverse or webiverse or webimetaverse, or whatever, you get the idea.

"a virtual-reality space in which a user can interact with
the real external environment,
a computer-generated environment,
and other real and virtual users"

All Good for the WWW,
Joe
