RE: [x3d-public] Emotion Markup Language @ w3c
Weird. So the OASIS HumanML folded and the W3C reactivated EML. Meanwhile
with support from NPS, a small company in DC applied for a patent on
precisely the same concepts spelled out in the HumanML public lists which
were subsequently publicly pounded by Michelle Raymond in DC but which were
the right way to do it, something Ms. Raymond either could not understand or
did not want to acknowledge.
The standards game is really becoming the inside screw job in the Beltway
these days. After years of supporting VRML and X3D, NIST announces it is
funding Forterra to "study" standards for hazmat training, something Eric
Maranne's company in France can already do easily with his system.
Forterra's designers diss X3D but don't have an alternative.
It is all just market FUD but damm, it is working to get them funding from
every spooky source in the beltway and one wonders what is up with that.
Gotta wonder what this W3C thing will do. If it weren't for lawsuits, I'd
say to hell with all IP considerations and tell developers to ignore them,
build anything, make money, then let the lawyers devour the spoils.
But this kind of *crap* is exactly why we need the consortium with the
membership agreements and the IP protection. Virtual worlds etc. have
become the new Carribean when pirates ruled. The only way to make forward
progress is to have one's own community with high walls and well-armed
defenders. After the long conversation with the fellow on the Virtual
Worlds comment response to Lauren Gauthier's comments, it is clear there are
professionals who will understand the position of X3D and the consortium
when explained with history and proper elucidation of the technical
concepts. It doesn't mean they always support them, but they do quit
dissing them.
