Re: [www-vrml] RE: [x3d-public] Shaders and Triangles: was dedicated working-group focus on X3D interoperability

Ok, thanks for the pointers, I'll definitely have a look at the new ABNet, and of course FreeWRL is coming along great guns for OSX. Also, I recently downloaded Flux Studio and I'm looking forward to making single-user stuff in that. The Media Machines crew quickly replied saying there'll be an OSX version soon, so even better.

Re MU, it's not a matter of "it must be easy", but a matter of "it must be possible".

Looking at the responses to my posited question of how do I make a multi-user audiovisual work using X3D right now, it seems obvious to me why someone would use Second Life instead:

"You could use this, but version this point x doesn't support [impenetrable geekspeak] because [some company name] didn't have [impenetrable geekspeak] until [some company name] licensed [impenetrable geekspeak] to AKOTEF (Acronym Known Only To Elite Few). You could get it running if you [impenetrable geekspeak], but it will only run on Windows with the [impenetrable geekspeak] Java [impenetrable geekspeak]."

I'm spangling it for effect, but seriously that is what it sounds like to me! I'm no fool (I know how to use Blender for example, and I can use scripting languages fine), but at the moment this is simply too much time and effort spent in my non-expert area in order to build a medium to work in before I can even start thinking about making content. To use your analogy Len, it is as if I have to physically build a club before I can play a gig, but I'm not a builder and have no idea how to go about it. Well, I tried that for quite a long time, modifying VNet (with plenty of advice from Russ & Steve), but I was just spending so much time *not* creating content it was exhausting.

Now, in 06, if anyone wants to view that work (Scorched Happiness from 2004) in MU version, they would have to be on a PC, download and install what evidently is an "illegal" version of the Microsoft Java Runtime, download Cortona and run it in Internet Explorer. Once they have done that, there is a very significant chance that their machine will crash.

I don't mean to insult anyone, and I am definitely staying in touch with all this and will keep exploring these options. The work ethic, persistence and vision of the people on this list is quite amazing. It's just that I am really enjoying being able to make stuff in SL right now, rather than having to concentrate on getting something working before being able to make stuff. The fact that I went into partnership with three other artists and producers (and these are not stupid or uninfluential people in the world of media) to buy an "island" at $3Kp.a. shows that I am committed to being able to build stuff in a multi-user world.

Kind Regards,
Adam

Right and as you mentioned, I forgot to mention Blender as a free editor.
It is very powerful and coupled to the BS exporter, a good way to get the
content made. OTOH, it isn't for the 'it must be easy' crowd.

Or you build for one of the commercial VRML sites that already license the
technologies such as JOI or its siblings. That is a 'pick your content
type
and who you want to work with' and take the risks with them choice.
Because
these are typically subscriber-financed, the money won't be that good.

AFAIK, the blaxxun platform does not support X3D content. Version 5.X of
Contact is what seems to be shipping with their platform. X3D didn't appear
in BS Contact until Bitmanagement released version 6.2. I don't think
Blaxxun
has any rights to the 6.X or 7.X series of the Contact player. Correct me
if I'm
wrong.

AbNet is a good compromise.

pronounced 'ABNet' but thanks!
