There's a thing called "self-publishing" which most publishers allow, with
certain (different) constraints set by each publisher. E.g. Morgan Kaufmann
publishers I think allow you to publish your papers on your own page
together with your other papers in PDF form only
Citeseer website (papers/citations search and archiving engine) has links to
docs that specify what kind of self-publishing is allowed by each of the
well known publishers. Then you just send a link to the original page where
the paper is to CiteSeer instead of having CiteSeer archive the paper.
Similar can be done with Web3D consortium, having links to author pages with
a bookmark to go directly to the respective paper title in that page (then
user would click there to download/view the paper).
Only problem is original authors may be hard to contact or not have web
space of their own, or their sites on free hosts could come and go etc. Most
of those can be solved by having Web3D give one webpage (and some server
space) to each such author to host/list their Web3D related papers. Then
it's still self-publishing and many publishers will allow that as I say
above
