RE: [x3d-public] Copyright and objects (was Web3D Zeitgeist - most popular format, one year on.)

Hi,

I agree with Viveka. Besides, what is usually shown in 3D is just a B-rep of the
product, only the skin of it, so the user can see it from different points of
view instead of browsing a bunch of photographs. Furthermore, this 3D
representation does not have to be exactly as the real one, only has to look
like it; textures, for instance, are used to represent some highly detailed
parts of products for which using polygons is not worth. So, you are not
distributing the original CAD file, just an infinite number of photographs of
your product in the form a 3D model.

Best regards,

José Pascual

I've never understood this argument. What if someone captures your
product design from your publicity photographs? Or by taking
photographs of your product themselves? Or by buying one and sticking
it in a 2D or 3D scanner? So what? Why does a Web 3D file have to be
uncopyable, when nothing else in the universe is?

If you have a design patent or they've infringed your copyright, then
you have legal redress. There is no technological measure that's going
to make a whit of difference. This argument is a red herring.

Regards,

V.
