Re: [x3d-public] Web3D Zeitgeist - most popular format, one year on.
Since most 3D viewers specify the data files they are reading through
attributes which google ignores, I would not expect this approach to
be very accurate at all. All that this gets you are lists of
downloadable files, or people who are naive about handling of mime
types. In pretty much guarantees you'll miss the commercial
applications of a technology.
All you're saying is that Google doesn't index most 3D technology, right?
Maybe I should get into the business of indexing 3D technology, and sell
it for a bundle to the highest bidder.
You'd like that, right? All your commercial stuff in an index? What
are you asking for?
Here's a quote from MSN: 'For the foreseeable future, 3-D searching is
likely to see only specialized business uses. However, Peter Norvig,
Google's director of search quality, calls the technology "interesting"
and adds, "If it starts to take off, we'll look more seriously at it."'
Does google really have the right to download all this content and host
pieces of it on their website? I bet
copyright lawyers could make an absolute ton of money off of google, if
they wanted to. I bet you those lawyers
who copyright page numbers in law books might be interested.
What if I decompiled the 3D PDFs to recaputure the design of your
product? You'd be really pissed if a competitor
came out with a competing product that just had a new logo on it? Do
people really want to put their 3D content
on the WWW? I can see internal networks.
Thus, we are only talking about people who want their 3D content
available, which means the open source folks...
why don't I have a decent 3D viewer on Linux? Should I be looking at a
game engine to display my mathematical
equations? With High Dynamic Range & transparency & animation ala
NVIDIA's HDR program? JOGL almost has
it, if I could figure it out. Alas, no source to that. (well, I could
decompile!).
