Re: [www-vrml] Re: [x3d-public] Web3D Zeitgeist - most popular format, one year on.

I stand corrected. ;)

Of course, what I meant was that I was hard pressed to think of a single example of VRML being used in a commercial application ON THE WEB.

Since then, I thought of one - kind of. Shout Interactive used VRML as their data representation, and they did a big marketing thing with Intel that could fairly be described as a commercial application (since it was mostly a big "commercial" for why you should buy a faster processor from Intel).

Our VRML-based product, SigningAvatar Friends, was part of Topic Entertainment's Instant Immersion American Sign Language which sold over 100,000 units.  Earlier this year, Topics released Instant Immersion American Sign Language v2.0 which includes our SigningAvatar Illustrated Dictionary and has already sold over 20,000 units.  Both titles have VRML encoded, H-Anim compliant characters which are driven by our Java-based animation engine to demonstrate and teach American Sign Language.

Despite the 4 million hits you found, I'm hard pressed to think of a single example of VRML being used in a commercial application...
