most of them will work with direct3D, that list should include Xj3d,
Flux, BS Contact, Cortona
xj3d is the only one I know of that has a java3D implementation.

do you mean one that compares vrml to an x3d encoding? don't know.
Reminder: VRML is an x3d encoding too: in the form of VRML classic.
You are probably thinking of the XML encoding.

This is such a general question it is difficult to answer.
You can write programming code in a Script node and that can also go
into a PROTO.
Performance overheads will depend entirely on the code that is written.

VRML Classic *is* x3d.
