Right.
As an alternative, have a look at the format we use: http://www.kaon.com/docs/spec.html
For animation, we have two abstractions: A "sequence" which is kind of like a VRML interpolator, in that it describes the range of motion (or appearance, or whatever) of a part or group of parts; and a "script" which moves sequences to different parameter values, and flies the camera around. Scripts can have a little straightforward logic in them, like when they make sense to run, and what needs to happen before they can run.
Using these simple abstractions, you can build very robust product simulations. But it would also be very easy to pull these abstractions back into an authoring tool, since they aren't programs, but rather data which describes how things work.
Just something to consider...
