[www-vrml] VOS/Interreality -- New release, and VRML/X3D coming

Hi folks. We've released a new version of VOS at
http://interreality.org. For this release, we have been fixing a few
bugs, cleaning up the code a bit, making a few improvements to the
browser application and making it easier for potential developers by
improving the Visual C setup and reducing the number of dependencies
required to build stuff. More improvement on that front is also coming
next release.
We have decided to make basic VRML97 and initial X3D support be one of
our primary goals for the next release. This means ability to load
static VRML and X3D (in the VRML syntax) content, within the limitations
of A3DL (not all VRML node types can be supported in VOS yet). I also
want to have events working so that routes and scripts work, but we'll
see how long it takes.
We're using OpenVRML to which support for X3D (in the classic VRML
syntaxt) is currently being added as well.
VOS can be considered a front-end delivery system for a VRML world. The
VRML world will be loaded from a file and will run in a plugin to the
VOS server program. This world can be linked in to other VOS worlds if
desired. Then people use the VOS 3D browser, "TerAngreal", to connect
to these worlds using the VOS networking protocols to browse them.
(Someday they will also be able to edit the worlds, and perhaps even
save the state of the world to VRML as well.)
See the website <http://interreality.org> or email me for more info
about VOS and Interreality. (Maybe some of you met Peter Amstutz at the
conference?)
