[www-vrml] the model to end all models
It turns out that the universe is a 3d model -- a simulation -- run by some unknown computer. This has been used as a plot device for a number of recent movies but has rarely been considered seriously. It turns out that bugs in many of the commonly available 3d modeling programs and languages have led to a proof of the artificial nature of our universe.
VRML/X3D, in particular has a number of serious flaws that turned out to be central in developing the proof. Without going into details, Norwegian researcher Loof Lirpa gave a demonstration at a small press conference of how the program running the universe can be altered: he walked through the wall of the office and then levitated a few feet off the ground.
He said he was hoping to install a new subprogram to bring about world peace by the end of the week, but was having some difficulties because of law suits from the RIAA who believed that it would involve circumvention of DRM. Of course Lirpa pointed out, smiling modestly, that he doesn't know what jail they expect would ever hold him, but he didn't want to upset people so he would proceed with caution.
Have a fun day,
- Miriam
