A little confused here, on what defines "large" and "complex"
How "large" ? how "complex" ?
Millions of polygons, thousands of things detecting collision with each other, birds flocking, plants growing, leaves moving in the wind. Being able to see kilometers in any direction.
These things are far beyond VRML/X3D capability (we can't even have more than a few PROTOs dealing with constant data streams), but the technology is out there to be able to make large complex worlds right now.
I'm not saying we need to get up and leave VRML/X3D. I'm not pointing the finger at the consortium or anybody else. All I'm saying is that this is a problem and here is how to fix it. I sent it in response to Jeff's post because I think Jeff is moving in the right direction. He is trying to actually fix things as he goes, and asks the community what they think.
Best wishes,
