Eeeek... almost last. :)

Not enough - because there is no obvious widespread application as discussed before..

Actually I think you have that backward.

Everybody talks about the killer-app. But I honestly think that comes afterward. So many things start off as a 'useless' gizmo. The laser was dismissed for years as an expensive toy. HTML didn't start off to be the thing that everybody would want -- it was just some geeks scratching an itch. Linux was another geek (Linus Torvalds) wanting to play with a free Unix on his home computer.

I don't think anybody will see the killer-app until it is obvious and we have all the technology in front of us. And then it won't be one of us, it'll be some kid on a school library computer in India or something.

AFTER that happens all the companies will jump in to try and gobble from honeypot. At that point there will be money a-plenty.

But a number of big companies putting in resources

I don't think the companies came in till later. In the beginning it was just a few smart guys and a rapidly snowballing community. I think one of the first companies that had a big role to play was SGI and I can't deny they performed an incredible service to the community. I doubt you'll ever find many companies like that though.

I respect your view - I hope the Consortium can prove you wrong :)

I really do hope I am wrong.

Best wishes,
