why?
if X3D browser can render scene on a backbuffer, a custom shader could use
that as a texture or whatever for doing reflections for example, couldn't
it?
as for shadows, those are similar, if one had custom shader on all objects
upon which shadow-casting is wanted in the scene, that shader could possibly
be passed geometry data from the scene so that it draws the shadows
appropriately on those objects (unless a shader in the upcoming X3D shaders
spec can't talk to the X3D scene? sounds a limitation to me if so)
