I don't think VRML97 or the VRML Classic encoding for X3D is going to
die any time soon. I prefer what I know. But XML is cool.
On the rest of your post, I can see where you're coming from but I have
to disagree on some points. I do share your desire for the simple
authorability that will attract new users and creators, however, I feel
this is now becoming achievable with the tools we have at our disposal.
As I said, I am quite positive about X3D and the future.
I now just want to get on with it.
