Re: [www-vrml] Tim BL Is Baffled, Too

Hi Eric,

That is a great idea.

As for ease of edition ... I learned VRML1 and 97 with Notepad, I don't
think I could do the same with X3D. And I think it induces one more step to
get to 'web3D'. This step is both technological (one has to understand a bit
what xml is, to begin fiddle with ... And even thru drag and drop), and
time/financial : anyone using a computer knows how to master Notepad, not
necessarily more complex tools, free or not (ie : compare Xeena install and
startup and Notepad one ...)... But well, a balance has two plates.

Yes. I agree, but it really doesn't have to be this way. POV-Ray worlds are far more economically written than VRML or X3D. I am sure that X3D could be made much more simple to write. (I have to say I'm still not convinced XML was the way to go.)

I'm highly circonspect regarding drag and drop tools. Legoland or
FisherPrice kind of worlds are accounting for the most part of the VRML
'touch' as felt by users ... and imho deserves it. Even now that I build my
own VRML production tools, I need to twikkle them by hand in VRMLPAD (yes,
best tool ever for VRML editing, and now I earned enough money to switch
from NotePad into luxury :) ...).

GUI tools will always have a very important place in creating worlds, but, like you, I'm convinced that writing worlds in text will always let the author do things that no GUI tool can. Both GUI and text are necessary parts of a flexible solution.

Yes, I've played with VRMLPad, and it is a lovely tool. I use TextPad on MSWindows and Kate on Linux because I need text tools that can work easily with many languages.

Best wishes,
