FYI:

We converted the VRML97 nodes used in X3D's Interchange (low-footprint)
format working in a pure Java 1.1 version. meaning no downloads. Added
additional nodes like pointlight, spotlight and a few others exported by 3D
Studio Max. Currently working on the X3D-only nodes like triangle mesh and
multi-texture, but no date.

It's available upon request, as I'm not sure how it will be packaged.

it would be really great to have an applet software-rendering browser
as part of our open source - no install required.

Mitch, is this an open project or part of your business? Either is fine
by me, of course, just wondering.

Alan, does the Xj3D community have any plans for a software renderer
(rather than Java3D and JOGL) for instant html-page rendering.

Point of information: Ken Perlin at NYU has offered his open-source
software renderer if anyone wants to adapt it. You can click on lots
of experiments at http://mrl.nyu.edu/~perlin

Point of information: some government/enterprise system enclaves that
are very strict about blocking plugin installations will allow run-time
applets.
