Web3D Consortium Announces X3D Conformance Testing Program
May 29, 2007 - San Francisco, CA - The Web3D Consortium today announced the official availability of the X3D Conformance Testing Program, a process for verifying conformance of X3D products. X3D is an ISO-ratified open standard for 3D graphics on the Web that is widely implemented in authoring tools, software development kits and browsers. The X3D Conformance Testing Program was designed to ensure adherence to the standard and compatibility among the various implementations of X3D.
X3D allows developers to incorporate 3D into web and enterprise offerings using 3D-aware XML tools. The X3D standard supports a rich feature set including geometry, behavioral modeling, spline-based animation, interactivity, audio, video, multi-user networking, and 2D overlays. X3D is being used in applications including visual simulation, engineering, CAD, medicine, education, training, entertainment, and virtual worlds. The initial version of the X3D Conformance Testing Program includes a test suite for verifying the correct display of X3D geometry, textures and animations defined in the Interchange Profile (subset) of the standard.
“The X3D Conformance Test Program ensures that X3D browsers provide a satisfying and consistent user experience,” said Dr. Don Brutzman, co-chair of the X3D working group and co-author of the recent book X3D: Extensible 3D Graphics for Web Authors published by Morgan Kaufman. “Content creators can be sure that their work will play in all browsers, while browser companies can still compete on performance and features. Conformance is a win-win situation and a key requirement for Web-wide 3D.”
Web3D also announced today that the first three products have been verified under the Conformance Test Process: CRC FreeWRL , an open source X3D viewer/browser plugin for Linux and OS X. The download is here: FreeWRL 1.19.5 ; Media Machines Flux Player , an open source browser plugin for viewing X3D-based virtual worlds and web content on Microsoft Windows; and Yumetech Xj3D , a cross platform open source toolkit for creating X3D applications.
The Conformance Testing Program is available for a fee to both Web3D Consortium members and the general public. For products that successfully pass the Conformance Testing Program, the X3D Service Mark can be used in printed marketing or packaging materials of the product or in application startup screens.

About the Web3D Consortium:
The Web3D Consortium is a member-funded industry consortium committed to the creation and deployment of open, royalty-free standards that enable the communication of real-time 3D across applications, networks, and XML web services. The Consortium works closely with the ISO, MPEG and W3C standardization bodies to maximize market opportunities for its membership. All Consortium members are empowered to participate and vote in Consortium working groups and are able to accelerate the delivery of their cutting-edge 3D platforms and applications through access to specification drafts and conformance tests before public deployment.
