I can report great success in running this June 20, 2021 release of X3D Edit 4.0 on Mac OS Catalina ( 10.15.7 ) and Java JDK 16; in detail:

radium> ./java --version
openjdk 16 2021-03-16
OpenJDK Runtime Environment (build 16+36-2231)
OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM (build 16+36-2231, mixed mode, sharing)

As a heads up, the Xj3D application installed with X3D-Edit 4.0 silently fails when loading a X3D file containing a UNIT statement.
This issue has been submitted, with example files, to the Xj3D gitlab site as issue #8

Thanks for the work!
Vince Marchetti
