Summary of XMP X3D metadata implications provided during today's STEP Geometry Services team meeting for CAD compatibly.

==========
Regarding XMP metadata inclusion within an X3D model: close scrutiny has confirmed this is possible, we are now working on mappings for (lossless) examples. Interestingly this path includes compatible query capability using Semantic Web mechanisms, further enhanced by RDF nature of XMP. We expect that external XMP files and equivalent embedded X3D MetadataSet structures are excellent compatible use cases. Further benefits of embedding XMP information within an X3D model include the ability to retain provenance information inseparably with the model, readable by X3D engine (or HTML DOM) at run time, and supporting strong trust via XML Security. Security features provided by standards compatibility include archivable canonicalization, authenticated digital signature, and privacy-preserving encryption.
==========

Incidentally their working term is "sidecar XMP" for metadata included within external XMP file.
