Kitware Inc., Clifton Park, NY Kitware announced today the adoption of a new open standard for the large data scientific visualization community with the inclusion of the ISO open standard X3D exporter in Paraview. ParaView 2.6.2, an open source visualization application developed by Kitware in collaboration with several US National Labs, now offers users the ability to save real “3D screen shots” ready for use within the most popular VRML/X3D enabled browsers.
This feature, which will be released as part of the next generation ParaView 3.4 and will be available in VTK 5.2 , enables IT engineers and developers to build new visualization tools for the web thanks to the ISO open standard X3D.

Specifications ISO-IEC-19774, -19775, and a part of ISO-IEC-19776 have been translated into Chinese. These specifications are on http://17de.com/x3d/ now. The newer Amendment translation continues.

In this interview, Neil discusses Khronos’ current technology standards such as OpenGL ES 2.0 support of programmable shaders, COLLADA and the liaison with Web3D. The reporter’s questions 9 - 11 address COLLADA, and specifically Question 11 addresses run-time:
Q11 Does Collada aim to become a standard for 3D objects broadcasting on the Web? Are progressive loading features available so as to accomodate limited bandwidth?
A11 COLLADA is strictly an authoring format and is not intended for use at run-time. Khronos has recently announced a liaison with the Web3D Consortium whose X3D standard is designed for deployment of networked, real-time 3D - including over the web. The liaison is to ensure that COLLADA and X3D seamlessly complement each other and COLLADA provides a solid foundation for tools supporting X3D content creation. It will be interesting to see if networked 3D technologies developed for the web will find use over mobile networks too.
