The “Virtual Reality in Scientific Applications and Learning Workshop” (VRSAL 2006) will be held in The Hilton, Glasgow, Scotland (UK) on May 8-11, 2006. Workshop themes: Virtual Reality based scientific visualization, Learning and assessment based on Virtual Reality approaches, Molecular Virtual Reality techniques, Computational Science Education, Distributed learning environments, Virtual classes and practice, Virtual Reality on Grid environments, Virtual Laboratories, Virtual Reality applied to the Cultural Heritage, Virtual Reality languages (X3D, VRML, Java3D, OpenGL), Immersive Virtual Reality.

H3D API is a C++ implementation of the X3D standard as a GPL licensed API for the development of haptic (touch-enabled) applications. H3D API uses OpenGL for graphical rendering and supports OpenGL stereo rendering modes. The latest 1.3 release now supports the X3D working group standard for shaders using both Cg and the OpenGL Shading Language, as well as environment mapping, audio support and offers easy-to-install binary packages for Linux, Mac OS X Tiger and Windows XP. Commercial, NON-GPL, licensing of H3D API is also available.

The Indo-U.S. Science & Technology Forum on Digital Archaeology was held at Mussoorie, India on November 11-13, 2005. Among technology issues discussed at the forum, several presentations were given on the role of X3D in archaeology.

Bitmanagment gave several presentations at Systems 2005 in Muncih on X3D and applications of VRML/X3D in both the industrial and consumer sectors. Presentations included:

  • “BS Contact Mobile” visualization software

FreeWRL is an open source VRML/X3D browser for Unix, Linux, and Mac OS X
computers. This release adds support for Mac OX 10.4.3, uses a smaller scene graph internal, and offer nearly complete support for the X3D Interchange profile.
