X3DToolKit is a portable LGPL free C++ toolkit for loading, displaying and processing X3D models. The toolkit is also very extensible, for the X3D language as well as for the existing functionalities.
- simply use the provided applications to view or process X3D models
- load and render static X3D models using OpenGL
- load and traverse the scene graph in order to edit it or simply extract informations
- easily extend the X3D language and use the new nodes in the two first use cases
Non-developers might just want to check out the Windows X3D Viewer.

Unreal is a wildly popular 3D FPS by Epic Games. While the web is filled with fan sites, user MODS, and Machinima movies all made using Unreal’s free Editor and content from the games world, almost all these fan sites have nothing more than 2D screenshots or an occasional movie. Unlike the actual game, the web sites are all boringly 2D.
A few months ago Dave Arendash, decided that he could present content on his Unreal fan website, one step better: by using Vizx3D, the Flux player, and X3D.
He used UnrealToX3d to export from the Unreal Editor, edited in Vizx3D, and used these real-time X3D files on his website. For the first time a fan based Unreal site looks as “3D” as the actual game! The results are impressive. The visuals are very similar online, to playing the actual game on a desktop system. Vizx3D also has a feature on this undertaking.

RenderMonkey is a suite of open, extensible shader development tools for creating realtime shader effects. This RenderMonkey2X3D developer tool converts RenderMonkey shaders to X3D. The source is released under GNU. The application has been tested under Win2K and WinXP. Other OSs will need to recompile from source.
For more information on X3D shaders visit the X3D Programmable Shaders Working Group web page.

The latest Xj3D development release (post-M8) adds a rework of the OpenGL renderer and update for JOGL (the Sun OpenGL bindings). If you’re looking for new and cool features, or your favourite bug to be fixed, this is not the development release for you. If you want to play with something other than J3D and do some performance comparisons, then come please download and test.
Changes since release M8:
- OpenGL Renderer based on the Aviatrix3D scene graph is now fully functional again. Not quite as complete as the Java3D, but within 75% of it.
- Xj3D Browser now supports both renderers
- Changed the xj3d-devices.properties file and the handler so that you could supply all devices for all renderers in a single file rather than one file per renderer.
- SAI bug fixes
- Lots of work extending the internal APIs to deal with both text and binary values for fields.

This article discusses the MutliTexture node in in X3D. This node allows the combinations of textures that are not possible in VRML97. The power of the MultiTexture node is its ability to reuse various textures, dynamically change the textures and operations, and animate individual textures in the collection.

Epic Games provides a free game level editor (UnrealED) for games based on the Unreal engine. The editor provides a rich set of authoring tools that can be used to create fully interactive environments. UnrealToX3D is a stand-alone Windows application that converts the scene files exported from UnrealEd to X3D, with great fidelity of content, including interactivity. It currently supports additive geometry, textures, key-frame animation of objects, as well as a few simple physical motions, flythroughs, lighting fx, sounds, meshes, proximity and time sensors, and interactive behaviors. UnrealEd has been used by thousands of authors to create new Unreal game spaces. These environments can now be converted to X3D for web or distributed environments.
