Introduction to X3D Graphics

This course provides an introduction to the principles and practice of building Web-based visualization models using the Extensible 3D (X3D) Graphics Standard.
Focus of the course is design projects.
This course has no programming or course prerequisites.
Students from many departments across NPS have successfully learned 3D graphics using X3D.
Each week you will review and prepare models illustrating some new graphics techniques.
At the end of the course you will create a modeling project that can be published on the Web. If you continue with the follow-on course MV4205 Advanced X3D, you can create a project to support a full thesis chapter demonstrating how to visualize your subject of interest.
Eligibility
Both NPS and external students are welcome to sign up for this course.
Enrollment
Formal enrollment at NPS is restricted to active-duty military officers and government civilians from the U.S. and allied nations.
Cost for distance-learning students registering for credit at NPS is $2500 per course.
There is no charge for distance-learning students who are simply monitoring the course.

Class Schedule
Each quarter lasts for 11 weeks. Stating Wednesday 30 March 2011 and will finish Friday 10 June 2011.
Tuesday and Wednesday, 1400-1500 pacific
Thursday 1400-1600 pacific
Friday 1400-1600 pacific (optional review questions and laboratory practice)
An audio teleconference line will be provided, video teleconferencing to other locations if requested may be offered.
Meanwhile all lessons are already available via online video.
Class Routine
Please refer to the syllabus for the chapter schedule. We will typically cover one chapter per week from the textbook.
Each class will review key concepts using the course slides and then examine course examples using X3D-Edit. You are expected to:
Have course slides ready for review and discussion
Have X3D-Edit, browser plugins and example scenes installed
Be familiar with the material and ready to ask questions
If you miss a class, videos are provided online that cover all material.
Project Submission
Weekly project submission is via version control to a course server. This provides a convenient record of changes and allows all students to view (but not modify) each others work. As with all endeavors, give credit to others if you work together. Further instructions on using Subversion in our X3D-Edit authoring tool will be provided and discussed in class.
Award
The combined X3D for Web Authors text, slidesets, examples and X3D-Edit authoring tool won the Computer Graphics Educators Material Source (CGEMS) jury award for Best Materials 2008. CGEMS is supported as a joint project of the Eurographics and ACM SIGGRAPH education committees.

The 16th edition of ACM International Web3D Conference to be held from June 20 to June 22, 2011 at Les Cordeliers, 15 rue Ecole de Medecine, Paris, France will address a wide range of research topics related to online 3D Graphics. Topics include: representation and modeling methods, content analysis, rendering, distributed virtual environments, large-scale databases, Web-wide human-computer interaction, and innovative tools and applications. Of particular interest are issues regarding the interoperability, durability or delivery of 4D assets.
The annual ACM Web3D Conference is a major event which unites researchers, developers, entrepreneurs, experimenters, artists and content creators in a dynamic learning environment. Attendees share and explore methods of using, enhancing and creating new 3D Web and Multimedia technologies such as WebGL, X3D, VRML, COLLADA, MPEG family, U3D, Java3D and HTML5. The conference highlights capabilities and trends in interactive 3D graphics across a wide range of applications and devices from mobile devices to high-end immersive environments.

Papers Submission instructions
Authors are invited to submit full papers of up to 9 pages (including figures and references) or short papers of up to 4 pages (including figures and references) in PDF format via the SRM Submission Site.
Papers must be formatted using the document templates for conferences sponsored by ACM SIGGRAPH. Upon acceptance, the final revised paper is required also in electronic form. Accepted papers will appear in the Web 3D 2011 Conference Proceedings, published by ACM Press.

Web3D Consortium’s HTML5/X3D Working Group will present Fraunhofer’s X3DOM a JavaScript-based layer for X3D that runs in any browser that supports HTML V5.
at the W3C TPAC 2010 in Lyon, France.
Dr. Johannes Behr from Fraunhofer will present updates and progress of X3DOM. This includes HTML-integration aspects like encoding, CSS and HTML-Events.
See us on Monday, November 1 in the “3D on the Web” AC-sessions meetings block from 10:00 to 11:00.
Wednesday, November 3 in the “Bringing new work”-session (part II) at 16:15.
We also plan to present to the W3C HTML5 working group on Thursday, November 4.
The Web3d Consortium’s X3D HTML5 Working Group presented a working demonstration with event passing to/from the HTML DOM using the X3DOM examples at the W3C TPAC meeting in Santa Clara, California in Nov 2009. At the W3C TPAC, 2010 meeting in Lyon this week the Web3D HTML5 working group will present further developments and updates to the X3DOM model. The W3C HTML5 working group can be found at: http://www.w3.org/html/wg/.
This X3DOM integration model is evolving and open for discussions. There is more work to be done to further this effort. Anyone interested in getting involved please contact Johannes Bher.

Fraunhofer’s X3DOM, a JavaScript-based layer for X3D. It runs in any browser that supports HTML V5 and JavaScript-based WebGL rendering layer, which include beta releases for Mozilla Firefox, Apple Safari and Google Chrome web browsers. It supports native X3D within an HTML page.
New features in this release include - CSS 3D Tranformation, multiple lights, large meshes and more.

Some examples of use of X3DOM are CAE Prototypes for Volkswagen, Flicker Data and Online Multi Touch Media Systems.
The system is (and always will be) open source with an MIT/GPL dual licence, and is currently hosted at sourceforge.
X3DOM is also featured in the November issue of IX Magazine on 3D Internet technologies.

Proprietary 3D authoring tools present a challenge to simulation engineers who want to import the tools into a simulation environment. Open standards for 3D scene authoring enable engineers to build, share, and connect to the tools across simulation environments. X3D an ISO XML-based standard and a predecessor of VRML contains sufficient intuitive 3D constructs that can be used to author 3D scenes. As an example, Simulink 3D Animation provides connectivity to drive 3D worlds authored in VRML from Simulink, thus enabling easy collaboration across different computing platforms. Choosing an open 3D standard also encourages vendors of proprietary tools to support them. The 3D authoring tools segment has been fiercely competitive as several free and inexpensive 3D tools have emerged and gained popularity. An advantage of standardizing on an open standard such as VRML/X3D is the availability of free or inexpensive tools for authoring.

Oxalya Group, a key member of the Collaviz project has joined the Web3D Consortium as a Directing Member to assist in developing and extending the X3D specification for scientific 3D visualization. The Collaviz project funded by the French government brings technology leaders together to find solutions for remote analysis and collaboration to the scientific and industrial community. These Web-based technologies with shared high-performance computing and visualization centers will allow researchers and engineers handling very large data sets, including 3D data models to collaborate in real-time.
The COLLAVIZ project integrates applications, allowing the exploration of scientific data in a collaborative mode for fluids dynamics, biochemistry and geophysics. One of the goals for this team is to develop a remote collaborative3D visualization framework for the Web as a decision-making and support tool. 3D scientific visualization faces new paradigms with various tools available today. Several 3D exchange formats norms are being addressed with a key interest in the ISO certified open standard X3D’s file format and runtime architecture format for Scientific Visualization Norms and Standards.
By joining Web3D as a Directing Member, OXALYA intends to take an active role in maturing X3D as the ISO standard that integrates delivery of real-time 3D scientific visualization with the power of XML on the Web and updating X3D pipelines that preserves BREP structures. OXALYA is a key technology provider for the Collaviz poject. OXALYA is researching and demonstrating ways to integrate X3D within the COLLAVIZ infrastructure for use by scientists to visually portray their inquiry and analysis results.

For OTC 2010 Octaga delivered videos and an interactive presentation to Siemens. The x-pert presentation at OTC was a great success and Siemens has announced their interest in using interactive presentations more often in the future. Nexans in # 990 has a Presentation Theater delivered by Octaga. The solution is a great tool to integrate diverse multimedia sources into one presentation. Have a closer look at the ROV umbilical video. The cable animation was a quite a challenge.
TCM (Technology Center Mongstad Booth #1124) is an innovative and interesting project to work with. For ONS 2010 Octaga has delivered an interactive presentation of the Mongstad production plant and a Flash animation for use at the show. Experience the presentations and learn more about the Mongstad project.
The Octaga Enterprise viewing component is integrated in the Enovia Project Lifecycle Management (PLM) system. Visit Enovia in booth # 1143 for demonstrations. Octaga Enterprise is in daily use by the operators and maintenance personnel at Shell Ormen Lange at Aukra and Kristiansund. Visit Octaga in booth #1216 and see how Octaga Enterprise helps save time and money in the operation of this plant. Octaga Enterprise is a visualization solution designed for handling lifecycle data for process plants and buildings. Recent developments include web support for incorporating X3D models in web browsers. This allows the 3D plant model to be integrated into web-based services and used as an intuitive, interactive 3D portal to asset data.

With the Web3D Conference and SIGGRAPH 2010 behind us, one question on everyone’s mind is – “when will the 3D Web be ready for everyone?” And “where does X3D fit in this evolution?”
The 2010 SIGGRAPH conference in Los Angeles gathered 3D graphics and web developers from around the world. Whether the company was a start up or an industry giant there was mention of 3D Web in their present strategy. But it seems that 3D adoption is slower than predicted. Why? The issue here is extending 2D processes to 3D and making them easy to develop and use. This may change with HTML V5, which brings us to the ISO certified royalty-free open standard, X3D, spearheaded by the Web3D Consortium. X3D’s file format and run-time architecture for 3D on the Web is being proposed to the World Wide Web Consortium’s (W3C) HTML Working Group for the purpose of best integrating developer and user-friendly 3D graphics with HTML V5. Many major forces are coming together now to enable the 3D Web to go main stream. The goal is to make the native authoring and use of declarative XML-based X3D scenes as natural and well-supported for HTML V5 authors, making the incorporation of X3D as easy as including an image.
Web3D Consortium member Fraunhofer has developed a JavaScript-based player for X3D. It runs in any browser that supports HTML V5 and JavaScript-based WebGL rendering layer, which include beta releases for Mozilla Firefox, Apple Safari and Google Chrome web browsers. It supports native X3D within an HTML page. More information on the X3dom project and example implementations are available at: www.x3dom.org. Due to the large interest there were several recent discussions, meeting and BoFs related to this project. Johannes Behr’s slide sets on X3dom are available along with other slide sets from SIGGRAPH 2010 and Web3D 2010 Conference.
This effort has strategic importance for Web3D and indeed for all 3D graphics, since X3D is an interchange format for a wide variety of models. We intend to establish a solid foundation for X3D to properly support 3D graphics in HTML V5. There is a claim today that use of X3D is marginal… Absolutely wrong! and we proved it at SIGGRAPH 2010! X3D remains the most widely used standard for the implementation of high integrity and high capability 3D systems. For a list of recent projects using X3D see X3D Use Cases and X3D Adoption. Because X3D is a direct evolution of VRML we have models over 10 years old that still run today. X3D is the only royalty-free and ISO-certified standard for 3D interchange file formats and runtime architecture for the Web today. Our interchange file formats and runtime applications include both open-source and commercial implementations.
There are several software tools (BS Editor , Octaga modeler, X3D-Edit, and others) to support X3D content creation. 3D content creation is a highly skilled and labor intensive process – these tools help automate it. The X3D Resources page has links to Examples, Applications, Authoring software, and Players and Plugins for X3D/VRML Viewing. They are all free downloads, but their developers may have other tools for sale.
X3D’s sweet spot is bringing 3D graphics expression to a wider audience, one not necessary trained in the art of 3D graphics programming, but fairly technical nonetheless. They typically write the behavior part and leave the graphics to the X3D player. X3D is a high-level language above OpenGL/DirectX in abstraction. With X3D they can create meaningful representations of their data without needing to understand low-level graphics.

The COLLAVIZ project team has organized a workshop on 16 June, 2010 from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM at the TER@TEC 2010 conference to discuss New Paradigms of Scientific Visualization. Web3D consortium’s Dr. Johannes Behr, Fraunhofer, Germany will present the X3D interchange format as one of the Scientific Visualization Norms and Standards.
As a real decision-making support tool, scientific visualization faces new paradigms. With scientific tools multiplication and their respective evolutions, questions regarding 3D exchange formats norms have risen and must be addressed. X3D, Collada or VRML are examples (among many others) of formats offering different perspectives to different users.The COLLAVIZ project is developing a remote collaborative visualization framework, aiming at giving access to visualization through a simple Internet connection. It already integrates applications such as Ensight or Paraview, allowing the exploitation of the results in a collaborative mode in fields relative to fluids dynamics, biochemistry or geophysics, etc.

Federal Consortium for Virtual Worlds (FCVW)

Web3D Consortium will be presenting a workshop at FCVW on X3D Graphics for 3D Model Interchange in Virtual Worlds on Wednesday, May 12 from 8:00 AM to 11:00 AM.

Extensible 3D (X3D) Graphics is the open standard for real-time 3D communication. Developed by the Web3D Consortium and certified by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), X3D is a royalty-free file format and run-time player specification that is compatible with many 3D technologies. X3D is also designed for reuse of content and archivable publication, making it particularly well suited for government use. Attendees in this hands-on workshop will use several tools and applications for networked X3D virtual environments. Finally a 10-point “report card” will assess X3D suitability readiness for federally sponsored online virtual worlds.
The Federal Consortium for Virtual Worlds (FCVW) consists of members from government (federal, state & local, & international), academia, and corporate sectors. The Consortium supports individuals and organizations to improve government collaboration through the use of virtual worlds to enrich collaborative online experiences. It provides a venue to share best practices and lessons learned for the collaborative use of virtual worlds, address common challenges, and create structures to share resources. Communication channels include a email announcements list, wiki knowledge base, and events.

Fifteenth in the series, the 2010 ACM International Web3D Conference will address a wide range of topics about 3D on the World Wide Web and on Multimedia Devices. The annual ACM Web3D Conference is a major event which unites researchers, developers, entrepreneurs, experimenters, artists and content creators in a dynamic learning environment. Attendees share and explore methods of using, enhancing and creating new 3D Web and Multimedia technologies such as X3D, VRML, Collada, MPEG family, U3D, Java3D. The conference highlights capabilities and trends in interactive 3D graphics across a wide range of applications and devices from mobile hand-helds to high-end immersive environments.
Authors are invited to submit their work (short or full papers) for review by the international Program Committee. Both research and applications papers are of interest to Web3D 2010.
