On-A-Slant Virtual Village

Our challenge was to inspire junior high students and engage classrooms throughout the US to teach students about American Plains American Indian culture.

On-A-Slant Virtual Village:

The Worldwide Web Instructional committee and the Archaeology Technologies Laboratory at North Dakota State University have reconstructed the On-A-Slant Mandan Indian Village archaeological site using the latest in X3D technology. The reconstruction is part of the On-A-Slant Virtual Village game that is used in junior high classrooms throughout the US to teach students about Plains Indian culture at the end of the 18th century. The Virtual Village employs state-of-the-art 3D computer visualizations that immerses students in the past, and provides them with the means to “travel through time” and “walk through” the site as it existed then. The virtual village game is delivered via Java Web Start and uses metadata nodes, the Layering component, and a customized version of Xj3D to produced a layered user-interface.

The public can play the current On-A-Slant game by visiting here
The version of the On-A-Slant game client shown in the screen captures will be available in late October, 2007.
