What’s hot in 3D today?:  Cartography, mobile, medical imaging and social networking

Did you catch Web3D at SIGGRAPH 2006?

If you made it to SIGGRAPH in hot sunny Boston this past August, we hope your visit was a success. If you found us, right next to the Google booth, thank you for visiting us!  Even better, we hope you made it to our Tech Talk on Wednesday August 2nd. Presenters showcased fourteen real world X3D applications: everything from three NASA projects to medical imaging protein renderings to amazing tools and converters to make your X3D work flow smoother!

The hot things in 3D today seems to be anything dealing with 3D cartography, mobile, medical imaging and social networking. All of these were strongly represented at our SIGGRAPH talks.  All of these areas present unique challenges and opportunities for X3D’s advancement as more than an ISO standard, but as a popular real world solution to 3D communications, whether it be over the web, in documents or in a mobile environment.

Speaking of mobile, both Bitmanagement and University of Udine offer X3D mobile solutions and we hope to see lots more of that next year at Web3D 2007 in lovely Perugia, Italy.  HCI Labs at University of Udine has some amazing MobiX3D demos.

As always, we are interested in hearing from you about your experiences at SIGGRAPH and more generally how X3D can be used for your 3D communication needs. We welcome any new or current Web3D Consortium members to join us in any of our endeavors, present or future. (drop me an email at rita.turkowski[at]web3d[.]org to learn about any of our X3D initiatives)

Our next big event and showcase will be Web3D 2007 in Italy this coming April.  More information coming soon but mark your calendars now.  Expect to see more in the target markets of 3D mapping, mobile, medical and social networking, as well as inter-application communication and Ajax3D.

Exciting times ahead for anyone interested in 3D!
