Introduction to the Web3D Website

This page is intended to assist new visitors to the Web3d.org web site and Web3D Consortium. It explains how the site is organized, where to find information, and how to participate as a Web3D member or user.

How is the Web3D Consortium web site organized?

  1. Specifications: The core published work of the Web3D Consortium appears in the Specifications. These specifications define the features of X3D and how these features are called by software or hardware. They also define how X3D objects can be controlled via scripting languages such as Javascript.
  2. Member Only Working Groups and Mailing Lists: Most of the Web3D specification development, feature development, grant activities and marketing activities goes on in the Working Groups. Any Consortium member can freely join any working group and actively contribute by logging in to the Members Only area of the website.
  3. Public Mailing Lists and Message Boards: Our Public Email Lists and Message Boards are where users and technology developers and implementors meet to discuss their ideas and exchange points of view. Mailing lists (including Mailing List archives) and Message Boards can be a good place to look for technical help.
  4. X3D Code Developers: If you are developing X3D software applications the X3D Development section has tutorials, open source projects, and various tools and sample files.
  5. Community Activity Including Blogs, Case Studies, Newsletters: Any member or non-member can participate in the Web3D community by sharing X3D models, viewpoints (Blog) or simply talking with other community members using email lists and message boards.
  6. Consumers and Digital Content Creators: If you are looking to view X3D scenes or use 3D content authoring applications to create X3D models and scenes, check out the X3D Content Authoring Tools, Viewers, and File Translators.
  7. Membership in the Consortium: Membership in the Consortium is available to individuals, companies and academic institutions. Members actively particpate in working groups and take advantage of marketing/PR.
  8. Contacts, Processes, By-Laws and IP Policy: Contact Information for the Consortium. Charter & Processes, By-Laws and IP Policy
